Slum Doctor 7/2006

Name: Andi Solberg

Marital Status: My husband, John, and I have been together for 17 years, married for 13. Our marriage is a multi-faceted, ever-changing journey that keeps getting better.

Children:  We have 3 children: Grace 10, Gabe 6 and Heidi 2. All three are strong- willed, which makes for challenging but exciting days.

Occupation: First and foremost I am a mother. My work in the world is client relations for our business John Solberg Creative. I really enjoy spending time in the community learning about people and their businesses.

In describing our business I just want to share our mission statement: “We deliver first class graphic design solutions to medium and large businesses. We promise to exceed our clients’ expectations throughout the service relationship. John Solberg Creative is a business built on relationships, integrity and experience. We aim to sustain a solid reputation in our community by continuing to deliver excellent products and services, as well as giving back to our community.

Where did you grow up: I spent my first 10 years in Coeurd ‘A Lene, Idaho then moved to Bellingham in 1983. I graduated from Bellingham High.

How long have you lived in Whatcom County: 24 years !

Favorite activity in Whatcom County: Anything that is family friendly- we love to be outside. Some of our favorites are Clayton Beach, various spots along the Nooksack, anywhere on the Inner Urban trail, Pioneer Days in Ferndale, Ski to Sea, Hovander Park. We also enjoy dog shows and events.

Favorite places to eat: We really like going out to eat- Mambo Italiano in Fairhaven – the food is fantastic and the setting is wonderful, one of my all time favorites is The Bagelry on Railroad Ave., I have been going there as long as I can remember and

they have the best soup in town.  Chihuahuas in Ferndale for Mexican and Red Robin is great for burgers and family dining.

Last community event attended: Sea to Ski, which we love and go to annually. I really want to tell you about the tour to Aluminum Chambered Boats, organized through the professional development series with WYPs (Whatcom Young Professionals). This company is incredible, it offers 110 jobs to our community at present. I was amazed to learn how this company is positively impacting Whatcom County. They bring a lot of money and resources into our community. The owner and the employees are truly wonderful.

Favorite listening:  This is a hard one – I like all kinds of music, classical, contemporary, I love rock, at present I am listening to Third Day.

Recommended reading: Two books at present, the first one is 90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper. This book has had a great impact on me. And Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas, he is a local author, living in Bellingham. He is a strong advocate of long- term marriages, saying it takes about 10 years to really begin to know your spouse.

Favorite non-profit:  We make it a regular practice to give and have been giving to our church, Ferndale Alliance Church, which supports a number of great organizations. One is CAMA, which supports missionaries all over the world. Others are the St Joseph Foundation and we are becoming more involved with the Boys and Girls Club in Ferndale.

Preferred local shopping: Samuels Furniture in Ferndale, Haggens - with 3 children it seems like we live there, Fountain Galleria, Fairhaven ToyGarden and Kent’s Garden and Nursery.

What do you like to do on a rainy day for fun: Baking, and hiking in the woods – it’s so cool when it’s raining.

Fondest Memory: Definitely the births of my children!

What do you love about Bellingham: The endless outdoor activities, the variety of people, the climate, and the geographical spot we are in the world--in between two fabulous cities, right by the Pacific Ocean, not too far from Alaska, California or Hawaii!
