Conifers - Shrubs - Garden Gear

Abies koreana 'Horstmann's Silberlocke'
    H:20'     S:5'     L Spring     Z:5

A striking and curious selection that always draws attention in our arbor beds, with needles strongly curved upright, and new growth exposing a brilliant white undersurface, making for the overall effect of an exuberantly flocked Noble Fir. Rapid in growth to 15 ft. or slightly taller x 5 ft. wide, while possessing the same remarkable cones of steely blue. Full sun is best in average garden loam.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Kosteri'
    H:6'     S:4'         Z:4

This cultivar is distinctive in its swirled, fan-like, deep green foliage and attractive brown twigs, creating a remarkably lovely creature to 6 ft. over time. This was one of the first cultivars of this species that I came to know while gardening in Wenatchee, Washington, and through all the years since, it has remained a favorite and exceptional addition to a mixed border along our upper drive, in full sun and well-drained soil.

Cryptomeria japonica 'Nana'
    H:1'     S:10''         Z:6

A remarkable low dome of densely arranged tiny leaves, on upright branches, turning various shades of red or brown during the winter, from summer green. A very interesting and effective specimen in our rock garden, forming a very dwarf specimen, to 1 ft. by 10' in 12 years.

Pinus bungeana
    H:45'     S:15'         Z:5

The Lacebark Pine, often planted in temple gardens, competes admirably with those deciduous trees grown for their effects of bark, with brilliant patchworks of white, lime and brown on maturing plants. The effect takes some time to develop, but is well worth the wait. 45 ft. Full sun, best grown in summer-warm climates though tolerant of the coolness of the Pacific Northwest (it is just a bit slower here).

Podocarpus lawrencii 'Purple King'
    H:7'     S:6'         Z:7

A striking selection which has become my favorite of all the hardy Podocarps, with finely textured summer foliage of blue green that takes on a striking, purplish bronze cast as temperatures nosedive in winter, lending superb color to the garden on a year-round basis. Ultimately producing a shrub 3 ft. by 6 ft., in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil, ideally used as a tall groundcover or for permanent structure in the foundation or mixed border.

Abeliophyllum distichum
    H:5'     S:5'     E Spring     Z:5

My appreciation of the Korean endemic "White Forsythia" grows on a yearly basis as the purple-black stems of this 4 ft. shrub are chock full of small, fragrant white flowers in late winter. A single cut branch brought indoors will fill the entire home with its sweetness. Best in full sun and a warm position in well-drained alkaline soil, though it seems to be quite adaptable in regard to soil pH.

Abutilon 'Snowfall'
    H:4' S:2' Summer Z:9

In blizzardly wizardry, pure white pendulousity, nodding pristinely, white bells, though in name, I find the size of each flower much too lumpy to simulate a snowfall; perhaps better a snowball. Vigorous, to 4 ft. 05367B One Plant $ 10.25

Azara microphylla
    H:15'     S:8'     Winter     Z:8

The hardiest species of Azara is still immensely underused in climates that can accommodate it, though it was apparently once highly regarded in Seattle horticulture, judging from the mature specimens scattered about the city. We have come to rely heavily on its presence in our front border, with glistening, dark green, finely textured foliage along a rather narrow format, to 15 ft. in 10 years. Tiny, axillary creamy yellow flowers scented of white chocolate are produced in late winter. Well-drained soil, full sun to partial shade, sensational in small groves.

Buddleia 'Ellen's Blue'
 H:8' S:6' Summer Z:5

We have named this cultivar for Ellen Hornig, who sent us this seedling from her garden for evaluation. A seedling of 'Lochinch', this has deeply saturated blue flowers, packing a powerful punch of fragrance in mid-summer and a good, deep green leaf color. There has not been a visitor to the nursery who has seen this and not inquired as to its identity. We thank Ellen for allowing us the opportunity to introduce this to other gardeners across the country. To 8 ft., in full sun and any draining soil. vvv
