Welcome to Explorations Academy!

Explorations Academy is an experientially based middle and high school run by Global Community Institute, a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1988. The founding principles of GCI were the need for effective strategies to fully engage and provide meaning for learners, and the need for an education which addresses issues of social justice and ecological balance.

We address our mission, printed below, through various programs: summer field study programs, professional development seminars for educators, and Explorations Academy. Explorations was fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges in 1998, and we began a middle school program in 1999. In addition to serving youth and teachers, we also serve the larger community through the many service projects that we sponsor.

Mission Statement:
Our mission is to develop experiential learning programs which encourage self-awareness and critical thinking, nurture healthy relationships and community, and foster personal and academic excellence.

Our vision is to cultivate diverse communities of healthy, creative, and engaged learners and leaders, working toward a socially just and ecologically balanced world.

Location and Size
Explorations Academy is located adjacent to downtown Bellingham, Washington, a city of approximately 60,000. We operate on a trimester system from September to June, and offer optimal summer, intercession, and independent study courses. Out student population is approximately 25 and we have three full-time and five part-time staff. Class size is typically twelve, and each class follows a curricular program called a thematic course cluster. Each cluster embraces courses from several different disciplines.

Our facility is located along the banks of Whatcom Creek, on which our students have done a number of environmental restoration projects. We occupy about 2500 square feet of classrooms, library, offices, and project areas.
